Not a terrible amount of plot progression here, but hopefully a bit more fun than the last page, lets play some Strike Ball!
How the game works; teams of 2 vs 2 or 4 vs 4 throw a momentum controlled ball at the opposite teams target panels. The ball starts with a low, sluggish momentum but gets progressively faster every time a catch or block is made. As the momentum goes up, the score multiplier goes up. So, at the start of a match the momentum will be low, and most passes will be between the two Forwards. Eventually the momentum will get too fast and passes will be between the two Guardsmen. You can rebound shots off of walls, it's basically like a big match of Air Hockey. Wanna play?

Always had an appreciation for football uniforms. A great appreciation.

Initial reaction: Heck yes, I want to play.
Second thoughts: Wait, this could be dangerous. If skilled players keep the ball going back and forth without scoring, sooner or later, it'll be moving fast enough to cause serious injury. Maybe I don't want to play after all.
Third thoughts: Never mind, I still want to play. I'd suck at first, so that wouldn't be an issue.
Koranos 31st Aug 2014, 5:30 PM edit delete reply
it looks like the ball itself is a hologram of sorts, I don't think there'd be any sort of phsyical impact should ball hit someone outside of their hands (the gloves probably enable catching). Probably a bit like laser tag. Besides, if it were a real ball, how would you increase its momentum on each throw?
Notos 31st Aug 2014, 9:02 PM edit delete reply
Notos
Koranos is correct, the ball is a projection. The gloves worn simulate pressure as if the ball is being gripped/caught/thrown, otherwise it's basically incorporeal. So luckily you won't get smashed in the face by it.
Seth 1st Sep 2014, 8:40 AM edit delete reply
While that is very good to hear, it also means that all the talk of momentum makes no sense. Momentum is mass times velocity, so if the ball isn't a physical object with mass, its momentum is necessarily zero.
Seth 1st Sep 2014, 8:45 AM edit delete reply
How would you control the momentum? Magic, of course, otherwise known as sufficiently advanced technology. I don't see why it shouldn't be possible in a sci-fi story.
Seth 2nd Sep 2014, 8:34 AM edit delete reply
I thought of a less flippant answer for you, Koranos: the ball is suspended by carbon nanotubes from a larger and more hi-tech version of the crossbeam motor used in arcade crane games. The controller for the motor is connected to the sensory apparatus that detects blocks and goals, allowing it to correct velocity as needed. A setup like that would probably be feasible with our current level of technology. The real challenge would be coming up with a way to control momentum by varying the ball's mass.

... Why, yes, I do tend to overthink things. Why do you ask?

Curious. I figured they'd be playing against another team, not between each other. I guess you could have them playing 4v4 together with another team?
It looks like a fun concept all the same. Nice work! :D

I wanted to have them vs another team, but realized it would have doubled the amount of bodies and poses I would have to draw, as well as a certain someone smack talking in an upcoming page ;)

It looks like the ball is a hologram of sorts. The scene brings back fond memories of the first Tron movie.
Notos 31st Aug 2014, 9:04 PM edit delete reply

Tron's disc game fed into this a lot. In fact I originally wanted the ball to be disc, and involve more 'discus throw' type poses but realized I had already committed to the name "Ball" so it wouldn't make much sense.

Man it is no wonder you are a successful professional artist. Your concepts and designs are outstanding and brilliantly executed. I could see this in a movie. I also get a retro feeling from this too, 80ish. For some reason the art style is reminding me of a lot of Walt Disney stuff. "The Black Hole" comes to mind for some reason. Anyway great stuff!

Thanks Chris, nice of you to say. I'm absolutely on an 80's kick with this whole thing, lots of neon, harsh black, and 80's styles. Also The Black Hole was a big favorite of mine as a kid.

I have a feeling that next week, things are going to be a bit more relaxed mostly due to the scene taking place in the locker room.

Though I gotta say I like the idea of this sport. Seems easy to follow (Like Quidditch!) and I like the idea of the ball gaining more momentum with each return. Also like Gavin's pose at the end like he's thinking, "Huh...that wasn't supposed to happen."

Doing the body hair is always a bit of a task, when it comes to characters that are 'dolphin men' like Gogol it's a bit of a relief I don't have to draw hundreds of little lines. Now I now how Larsen feels drawing the Savage Dragon. I do dig some hairy dudes though.

I beg to differ. lol. First page is a lot of insight into Galvin thru his recurring, yet oddly somewhat controllable (to a degree) dream, to seeing this game (I took it to be a practice thing, since in my head pairing off the members of the team helps each individual to be able to learn their co-players moves to help integrate into a better whole when it comes time for 4 on 4) where Galvin and Gabimaru are already many points behind to that very showing (if indeed tiny, but you can still make his emotion out!) of Galvin further indicating his fears are beginning to affect the other aspects of his life...as he stated in his dream. May be a small plot progression to some, but a very telling one (and massive points for continuation of plot from the dream!) Art as always is fantastic. You did get me hooked on that damn clicking thing, as I now look forward to what little nuances and subtleties will pop up in the next panel. Evil man. Very evil. Is it next Sunday yet?
Mykle1616 1st Sep 2014, 1:41 AM edit delete reply
ok, just saw the first box labled Exhibition Game, so maybe not exactly a practise session. That has interesting connotations to it. I'm not the most sportiest person in the world, but this presents about 12 new questions for me to ask. lol.

Thanks so much for your comment above, you are definitely right about Galvin and Gogol getting stomped in this match. I'm not terribly sporty either, but I believe an exhibition match is essentially a practice / game that doesn't count toward any rankings. But again, I draw for a living so I could be wrong!
BigfootGolem 1st Sep 2014, 2:05 AM edit delete reply
I wonder, with this being a hologram sport, there wouldn't be many injuries would there? Also how would the ball hitting the body work, a foul for the person hit?
Notos 1st Sep 2014, 3:53 AM edit delete reply
Notos
I hadn't thought about rules for fouls, though I imagine there isn't really any rule for fouls like that since the object of the game is to protect the panels with your body and the ball can't actually cause any injuries. Interesting questions though, I was never very sporty so I'm not terribly knowledgeable on this kinda thing.

So, I found this webcomic yesterday and... I'm in love. The story is so cute, the world tickles my love of sci-fi and the animated panels are inspired.

but, I have a horrible feeling something awful is about to happen to our main characters to interrupt the unadulterated cuteness D:

I actually had the same suspicion when i started reading the comic, Alt+F7, but I guess it was more related to growing up as a queer kid seeing way to many "tragic queers/bury your gays" stories on media and expecting the worst. Growing up without seeing you having a happy ending again and again can make you internalize a lot of nonsense, i guess.

Notos actually showed several times that he seems to respect both the audience and the characters personalities in a way that many mainstream comic artists that I had the experience of reading, which means that if he add some tragedies or sadness on it i'm sure it will be well handled and not for shock factor.
josbell975 7th Sep 2014, 5:42 AM edit delete reply

I'm the same way. I even wrote a story like that a hundred years ago. Sad really. The only thing worse was finding true happiness...with a female. Gay stories should not work like that.
Drackir 3rd Sep 2014, 1:52 PM edit delete reply
I really like how simple to understand the game is but that it would take a lot of skill to actually play. It reminds me of Squash only without the racquets.

I also like how a game like this could only exist in a setting like this. It's a really good example of taking into consideration the setting and then thinking about what it would imply.

Plus skimpy shorts.
Notos 4th Sep 2014, 1:08 AM edit delete reply

Yeah I had Squash in mind when thinking up this game, something that has relatively simple rules. And skimpy shorts, always a plus.

Because they are on the same team, that's why they all have the same uniform. They always do this in sports, play against yourselves. Shirts vs skins if you will.
