We've got 1 more page until the end of this chapter, and the start of my next catch-up hiatus, and not a moment too soon; I only finished this page yesterday so my buffer is officially run out. I've got 1 week to finish the chapter closing page, the biggest page in the chapter. Will I do it? Will Vinnie have enough DLC to enjoy the night? Will Galvin make a good impression on the Hot Legs gang? Will Galena have a fabulous new hairdo? All these important questions answered next Sunday! (Hopefully, wish me luck)

Check out this Buying Time review on the Sexy + Geeky blog!

At some point this week I'll be doing an interview with the blogs' author Harry, so be sure to check back here in the comments, or there for when that goes live!

That guy was completely hilarious!
I especially liked the "put my sunglasses down as a mark of disbelief" one, I was LOL!

And don't be pessimistic, Vinnie, you can do it!
And you too, Notos!

Your comic is starting to finally make me understand how two people of the same sex can love each other. It appears to be just like a heterosexual relationship really.
Grall 25th May 2014, 6:10 PM edit delete reply
Curious. What did you think a gay relationship was like?
chris-tar 25th May 2014, 7:16 PM edit delete reply
chris-tar
To be honest, I thought it might be different somehow. Perhaps more stressful than a heterosexual relationship due to the social stigma of being gay. I don't see anything anti-gay in this comic, so I guess in this world everybody is pretty accepting.
Notos 25th May 2014, 8:27 PM edit delete reply
Notos
I've mentioned this before, that I see this happening not only in real life, but in the comics' world as well; we see less and less of a stigma/homophobia as time goes by (slowly, very slowly, but its happening). Yet we see more and more of the comics' kind of microtransactions/privatization/other methods of economic exploitation.
I think in the future we'll see much less social problems and far more economic ones.
The Pugpieper 27th May 2014, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
I have to say, in the smaller towns you will still see the stigma/homophobia rear it's ugly head more often than not. In the larger cities it's nothing new to anyone, but in small towns, you have many small minds. Yes, there are many accepting people there too, but odds are strong that's where it remains for now. I see it first hand in my town, we've tried to have a few gay bars over the years, protests at the bars and city hall have occurred. The city itself put pressure on the establishments and forced closings via fines as an excuse to shut down the bars and causing economic damage. Mostly in gay relationships, money is becoming more of an issue than stress from society. Just like any other relationship money is a big factor in how well the relationship goes. The stress of paying bills, or one having more money than the other causing a power imbalance destroys gay relationships just as quickly as our straight counterparts.
Grall 25th May 2014, 8:32 PM edit delete reply
Ah ok, I misunderstood your original comment. I can see where you're coming from.

As you said, it's Notos' world. I'd imagine people in his world have "evolved" enough to not care about someone's sexual orientation, or be offended by an open show of affection between a same-sex couple.

We can all dream. :/

Well that guy was hilarious!! My favorite page of this chapter yet. I was trying to figure out if he was really that pretentious, or if he had some sort of paralysis that he refuses to replace with synth parts so she had to do all his movement for him, but everyone else seems to thing he's just that pretentious, so I'll just go with that.

Quick side note, it's "hard-on".
Notos 25th May 2014, 8:31 PM edit delete reply

Naw, he's perfectly able. He is just so rich, eccentric and probably full of himself he would rather have a very well paid assistant do it!
And thanks for the spelling fix.

There were bubbles in the tank. I can't believe how amazing that is to me. Bubbles. In the tank. How easy it would've been to have left that static, but no. Bubbles there were.

Oh yes, BG was hilarious, with his sidekick. Vinnie was cute and fridge awesome. Other people covered that much more thoroughly than I would've.

Bubble.

Awesome page! BG and Sybel were quite the pair; I'm still deciding if that would be a ridiculously cool or tedious job, doing the physical gestures for another person. And it's a shame Vinnie couldn't afford a little video nookie with Galvin; that would have been sweet! Hopefully they'll get a chance to at least kiss some more when they see each other at Hot Legs. Hm, I wonder what their lunches are like at work now that they are a couple? You can do a lot of quickie nookie things in 24 seconds (isn't hat the "race period" for interaction? Or does touching of any kind automatically trigger charges?). Looking forward to the next update, but not to the following hiatus. D-: Necessary evil I guess, but now that I'm hooked, I'll gladly wait. :-D

They work the same shift at HCC but certainly not in the same sector, as the City Core is way WAY too huge to run into each other without making an effort to do so, outside of the locker rooms at the end of the shift, which Vinnie would skip anyways in order to work overtime.

Physical contact is an instant trigger for charges, though something like a handshake is likely a 'freebie' like certain types or lengths of vocal interactions (check out the Chapter 1 supplement for more DLC info)

*gasp* They said the "L" word! *squeeeee!* I've commented once before, but forgot to mention that Alex sent me from Young Protectors... I have to tell you, I'm really intrigued by the concept of this comic. The whole Daily Leisure Credit system is a nifty way of dealing with overpopulation in a city that seems very limited on space and resources. If you charge for sex, then fewer people will be able to afford to procreate. As "wrong" as it feels to me, morally, I can't help but see the logic in it.

Hi! Came here via YP, but I actually like your story much more because, well, it's the kind of SF I like to read. I like that the love story just happens as they both continue their lives, and your (and our) interest isn't focused one the couple but also on their friends, hobbies, and social situation.
I'll be a regular reader!
PS I'm usually too shy but since I had the impression you seem not to mind I'll point out that "recently" (5th click in first panel) has only one c.
PPS I love your characters, even the minor ones. Bonus points for the protagonist being short and chubby.

Sofia 25th May 2014, 8:58 PM edit delete reply
I'm torn. I can't decide if Mr Gold is the coolest guy ever, or the douchiest. "Sybel, lower my sunglasses in a display of disbelief". That was awesome! (See what I mean?)

On another note, I hope the pressure won't get to them and they'll be able to come up with 2 good songs. I guess it can be different when you do something because you love it, not expecting something in return and when you see it as an assignment...

I liked the late night screen-call, it's obvious V and G and from two different worlds in more ways than one but V felt the need to share his fears and hopes with him, so that's a good thing, right?

Also, did anyone else notice these two said the L word? Have they said it before or did they just let is slip and haven't even realised yet?

Thanks for sharing, Notos!

Heyas! I'm really sweating it out for Vinnie and Fridge. I hope they don't change up their hit-making formula. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It's nice to see Galvin and Vinnie's relationship gaining more ground, as well. Makes my Sunday worth accessing the Internet. *grin*

Oh BTW, "recently" is misspelled in Big Gold's dialogue (it should have only one C).

Here's to hoping you can complete the final page in this chapter by next Sunday (if not, we'll understand).

Random question because I can't quite remember right now, but is there any form of currency other than DLC?
Notos 26th May 2014, 11:59 AM edit delete reply

Not for interactions specifically, DLC is the dominating form of currency. 'Credits' is basically the new dollar, and you use credits to purchase DLC.

Well, I have the memory of a flea. I totally forgot about credits. Very silly. 8D
Jess 26th May 2014, 4:04 AM edit delete reply
That went surprisingly easier than i imagined. I have faith that fridge and Vinnie can make two more hits, yet some how i still have a iffy feeling about this. Should i? Lol! Maybe i'm just paranoid. I was laughing at the fact he was using Sybel as his hands, making her gesture and what not. Galvin is right this guy seems flakey but time will tell. I love that Galvin said i love you to end the call. Those little things show how their relationship is slowly progressing and getting deeper. In love with this series and i want everyone else to be too so i can talk about it! Good work! I do have a question though, seeing as im new here, how long do your hiatuses last? I know you need time to make them so you have stuff to post but i wanna know so i dont accidently forget about this comic in the time your not posting (trust me, its happened to me before lol). If you don't have a specific time frame just ignore me! I was merely curious. Thanks for the nitro update!!
Notos 26th May 2014, 12:02 PM edit delete reply
Notos
Hey thanks for commenting and glad you're enjoying it! Hiatuses last around 2 months (I've found if I 'catch up' for 8-10 weeks, I can put out weekly updates of new content for 10-12 weeks.) Also if you're new you'll find I still update each week during the hiatus with sketches, chapter production art and other goodies, I usually close the hiatus with a reader participation bit like Ask Papa, Ask Fridge etc. So you'll still have updates each week, I won't just 'leave' for months at a time ;)
Perry 26th May 2014, 4:16 AM edit delete reply
Mmmmmmmmm it went really well! That's awesome! The new characters were mm-mm good. Something about the thumbs up in particular really cracked me up.

Somethin' that's been floating around the edge of my head while reading this comic made itself really clear to me with this page. The way Galvin and Vinnie are going about this relationship is really different. I mean sure, that's obvious, but I realize that it's kind of been scaring me. Unlike Vinnie, Galvin's got no apparent problems with his looks or socializing, and it shows in how easy going he is with pretty much everything we've been privy to. Even though I don't really think it's true, coming from a more Vinnie perspective, it's easy to think that Galvin isn't as invested in this as Vinnie is.

So basically I'm p. sure Galvin's a stand up guy but as somebody who isn't confident in situations like this his attitude is comin off a little too nonchalant to be droppin the l-word. And I don't want Vinnie's heart to get stomped on. Even though I'm pretty sure it won't. Illogical.
Perry 26th May 2014, 4:37 AM edit delete reply
Weepwohp I forgot to mention that I feel bad that you have to work so hard to get the next page out! Thank you so much for makin this comic. Excited for the last page. I have to say, your comic is my current favorite. You have an awesome sense of humor, your characters are believable and loveable (Vinnie makes me just want to squeeze him, swear to god), and your developing plot line is incredibly engaging. I have absolutely no idea what to think of BG and Sybel. BG seems over-the-top, and Sybel doesn't seem to have much of a personality (so far). I'm hoping that you get a chance to flesh them out a bit more in their next appearance. I know how hard it is for writers to get a chance to really bring secondary (or tertiary) characters to life without having them steal the show.

since I only follow this recently, how long would you say on of those breaks of yours last approximately? weeks? months? just curious :D
thanks for the hard work ^^

Notos 26th May 2014, 12:12 PM edit delete reply
Notos
Hey thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The breaks last anywhere from 8-10 weeks (I generally lay out 2-months as a starting point) and then see how production goes during that time and either shorten or lengthen accordingly. I gave myself about 2 months and a few weeks last time and as able to make it through this entire chapter with no breaks.

As I've mentioned before I still update weekly with sketches and chapter production art (as well as schedule updates) so it'll still be worth it to peek in.

Beginning to think Fridge must have had a wealthy family or something. I mean, it was Vinnie who had to drop studying music for lack of funds; Fridge only stopped when he was sick. And he could afford to go full synth, with extras. Even in a future with socialised health care, he still must have had to pay for the bells and whistles.

Plus he manages to live on level 32 - Galena and Vinnie only live on 12 and 10 respectively. Even with two jobs, thats quite a 'class' distance, if levels are indicators.

But the main reason I think this: he is just such a wonderful chatter-box that I just can't see how he keeps on top of his DLC without a decent trust fund.

It's true we don't know much about Fridge's life or family before his sickness, he may very well come from a rich family, or had his SBPR paid for by them. His Pawn shop could also be lucrative enough to support his social life.

That was such an establishing character moment with those two. Loved the humorous tone of Big Gold and Sybel. Plus Galvin is going to hangout with Vinnie's gang, can't wait!

Seriously, those moments between the characters where they just chat and chill out a bit to me are the best in fiction, it makes you feel like you're kind of "part of the gang" and makes the connection between the reader and the story a little deeper.

Brilliant comic. Art, character development, humour!! Surprised BG didn't coin "It takes DLC to Make DLC". Going to miss you when you go on hiatus, but as others have commented before don't push too hard and sacrifice your art for deadline. Rock 'em Vinnie.

Finally was able to read this and i have to say seeing the prices for talking for less than half hour constantly during this comic. It seems like you would have to sell yourself to the devil to have a good social life from day to day.

Hello! Another reader from YJ and Alex here. I had a couple of questions about the world, I know that there will be a question section at the next break in the action, but I wanted to get the questions out of my head.

How does the DLC work if someone is trying to talk to you but you a). Don't want to talk to them. or b). Can't afford to talk. Can you just ignore the person, or do you have to walk away? Are they charged and you aren't?

What about accidental physical contact? i.e. You fall into someone, brush past someone? Or if you are trying to walk away from a person you don't want to spend DLC on and they grab your arm/wrist etc.

Lastly, do people who aren't organic anymore pay the same rates as people who are? Since Fridge has no skin and therefor doesn't have the same experience as skin, does his rate stay the same as someone who does?

Hey, welcome aboard! The chapter 2 Supplement and Ask Fridge segment might help answer some of your questions but I'll try my best here too.
DLC tracking only kicks in after 20-25 seconds of conversation takes place, you'll notice a few times in the story the characters say "...before DLC kicks in", they'll say something quick like "Let's meet tomorrow." or something. So in the question about only 1 person talking, only that person will be charged and only if they go on for a certain length of time.
Same thing for physical contact, (I think the chapter 2 supplement mentions this, can't quite remember.) certain types of physical contact are "freebies" like handshakes, so accidental contact, brushing someone, bumping into someone would be free, it's only when we get into more lengthy, intimate contact when rates apply.
Synth body parts have the same sense of touch as organic skin, the Ask Fridge segment answers a lot of physical questions people were curious about (personal ones too!) so the same rates for people with synth upgrades apply.
Hope that helps!
