I love ya Fridge, but man you take long to draw. I have made an effort to give each main character a different manner of speaking. Fridge is a chatterbox who interrupts. Character profiles have been updated also. Originally Buying Time was going to have audio, sound effects and music but ultimately decided against it. Though for the next few pages in the Hot Legs club, some nice 80's synth music would be a good background accompaniment if you so choose. Thanks for reading!

Heh, a fashion conscious cyborg (Synthborg?), a far cry from the 'armed to the teeth' variety!

From a creators perspective, having to keep track of character interaction for accounting purposes would certainly make me pay more attention to how I write dialog!

It's been a bit more in depth than I was expecting (keeping track of the funds and expenses) mostly because it turns out readers had alot of questions about the specifics, which is great, I just need to stay ontop of it all. Makes me feel like I'm part of the system!

Mmm that disease mm is that maybe something that is in this world or only fridge?, this comic get more interesting each page, now we now some of vinnie's past
Notos 23rd Jun 2013, 1:48 PM edit delete reply

The disease was probably something common like cancer, I don't really want to make a new disease exclusive to the story, only the fact that people can get body replacements to fight it (if they have enough money)

im curious also to know the reason of the synth implants on Galvin that would be interesting to know

Fridge was pretty cool, I like how the folks who can afford it help out their friends with DLC...

Yeah I figure folks in the lower levels would do that alot, kinda like paying for someone's meal or something like that.

This comic makes me think. which is weird. After all the upgrades, is there enough left of fridge that can classify him as being human, or alive.

Something I always liked about stories like Ghost in the Shell (another big favorite of mine). He retains all memories and personality traits, Synth replacements are advanced and function exactly as regular, only not just flesh and blood. Stuff to think about I guess!~
Chris Mudd 24th Jun 2013, 1:02 PM edit delete reply
How does Full-Synth work. Does he still have a meat brain, or has his "Ghost" (as it were ;)) been transfered to a computerized brain?
Notos 24th Jun 2013, 1:35 PM edit delete reply
Notos
I'm leaning toward 'meat brain' but maybe with some 'additions', optical implants(obviously) and some other memory storage implants or other 'goodies'. I imagine although advanced enough to replicate human body parts the mind, memory and personality aren't things that can be replicated, so I haven't gone full GiTS in that respect..

Love fridge! Though, in the battle between humans and robots, which side does he take?!

Good thinking on the no sound, I've helped designed websites for a while now and its always recommended to not have sound OR make it optional. But don't have the sound start on its own, let the user turn it on if they want, if not the sound can come off as annoying and might push away people from your site. Though your comic is so awesome I think even with sound it would be find, LOL
Notos 24th Jun 2013, 1:37 PM edit delete reply
Notos
Yeah, I'm thinking it was a good idea to decide against sound, although some cheesy 80's synth pop would have been the cherry on top, I don't want to make the pages chug more, or annoy people.

Fridge's character is creepy to think that there is a human being somewhere inside all that machinery. The question then becomes if you can even consider him to be human. Is the only human part of him left his brain?

This comic reminds me of those old point and click adventure games. Very cool!

Think of it like prosthetic technology in the real world. We can already replace entire limbs, hearts, etc. How long before we can replace everything? If someone needed a full body replacement to survive, I think I'd still consider them human after all was said and done.
TheSmilingPsycho 24th Jun 2013, 8:50 PM edit delete reply
TheSmilingPsycho
Yea, but it's still creepy, lol. Especially because it's considered normal in this comic world. Like Vinnie isn't even startled by it.

If his brain is still intact though, I'd say he's still human. But yea, I dunno.

So is Fridge really his name or is it a new nickname he received throughout his... transformation? To be honest, until diseases were mentioned I thought you were trying to imply he was like a trans...borg? Kinda like transexual, but wants to be a robot instead of human. ._. hooray for my imagination.
Notos 24th Jun 2013, 8:32 PM edit delete reply

Fridge is his nickname, his real name is Leon. He got it from being a full-synth Bouncer who is built like, well, a Fridge!

It was fun watching him try so politely to end the conversation and leave. I've so been there. But Fridge seems like an decent guy.

OK here is a web comic that is taking some chances and showing one way this latest medium of sequential art can be used. While Scott McCloud might question if this perfectly meets his definition of sequential art it is cool regardless. I have seen other web comics attempt to meld panels and animation but it comes off gimmicky at best. Buying Time however, appears to make the merging of the two forms work.

I have subscribed and look forward to what else you do with the story. There is a pathos already to the characters that evokes sympathy and hints that there is tragedy near at hand.

Thanks so much Kim. I'm learning as I go, like any medium it has its strong points as well as weak points, but it's been a joy to work on so far.

I like the cameleon animation sequence. It really takes good advantage of the flash medium. Also - another synth /real point of reference this coversation reminds me of- the nano clouds in Warren Ellis' Trsmansmetropolitan.

I can dig it, good song! I listen to a youtube channel called Maniac Synth whenever drawing the comic, it's full of great synth pop, a bit lighter and more cheesy than that song but I'm addicted

oh, I listen to Maniac Synth too, yeah i have a little bit of everything crammed into 1 of my playlists. I try to give all music a chance.

Love how Fridge changes color!
This is such an interesting way of telling your story… you can get so much more conversation on one page that if done as a 'normal' comic would take 3 of 4 pages of lots of text.

Came here via Alex (Young Protectors).
